Kindergarten |
|
|
|
Program Description |
|
Full/extended-day kindergarten program: district has a 3-pronged approach to
kindergarten designed to match children's differing paces of development: K1
program: standard 5 half-days/week kindergarten; K2 program could be
considered preschool; and Pre 1st could be considered a full-day
kindergarten program. The Pre 1st program usually serves young 6-year-olds
or older 5-year-olds. It's for children who've made good progress in
kindergarten but are not quite ready for regular 1st grade. This is a
full-day program and the state treats it as 1st grade for funding purposes. |

The
path that children may follow through these programs varies according to
children's needs. The program is intended to allow for individualization in
recognition that young children grow at different rates. |

Pre-Kindergarten |
|
|
|
Program Description |
|
The
district's K2 program could be considered a preschool program. The state
allows early entrance to kindergarten at a district's discretion. The
district does early entrance assessments for 4-year-olds who don't turn 5 by
the deadline. Children exhibiting readiness for kindergarten can attend.
These children have often been in pre-kindergarten programs for multiple
years and are ready for something more advanced, but still not ready for
the pace of the K1 program. Curriculum is similar to K1 but adjusted
according to needs. The program operates on a 5 half-days/week schedule. |
